Could a cocodrile survive in the Artic?
Really, a cocodrile could survive in the Artic.
The reason is that studies seem to suggest that
cocodriles may have lived in higher than they currently reside latitudes today.
So, 55 million years ago, the Artic climate was so warm and hot as Florida, and
it abounded an animal very similar to the cocodrile: the Champsosaurus.
The task of determining how individual species not to
mention ecosystems, will respond to this climate change is very difficult.
In the same regions where they have been found remains of Champsosaurus fossils
have appeared also his favorite food: turtles. Today´s cocodriles could feel
comfortable in a warmer north, but only if proliferate dams and ecosystems
necessary for their survival.
Cocodriles live in tropical climates for a reason. They are cold-blooded and cannot generate their own heat. Although there is a last obstacle, although the warm
Artic air, there will still pretty ice in winter. The most aggressive climate
nodels estimate that the ice caps will take thousands of years to disappear, so
cocodriles will have to wait enough to move to the poles.
